| Collection Description |
"The Haworth is home to a world famous collection of 'Favrile' ( meaning "hand-made" ) vases, tiles and mosaics and related material, from the New York Studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1843-1933).
Tiffany was the leading American exponent of the "Art Nouveau" style in the decorative arts. An Accrington man, Joseph Briggs, sailed to America in 1891 to seek his fortune and worked in various jobs with Tiffany in New York for almost forty years. He presented his Tiffany collection to the people of Accrington in 1933.
The Accrington collection is the largest public collection of Tiffany glass in Europe, and consists of over one hundred and forty pieces of highly decorative, gloriously coloured and intricately styled glass in the "Art Nouveau" style.
Following the recent refurbishment, the collection is now displayed over four rooms with the themes of 'Tiffany and Interior Design','Tiffany and the Past','Tiffany and Nature' and 'The Tiffany Phenomenon.' The rooms also incorporate some gentle interactive games which we hope will appeal to all ages and provide an improved experience for our visitors." (Haworth Art Gallery website) |
